The sun was barely rising when Renee began to stir from slumber. "C'mon June, You're going to be late!" Kae's voice could be heard clearly across the street.
"If I could just fly it would be ok." June said disappointed.
"Yeah but normal people aren't used to witches flying around on their broomsticks. So off to the woods!" That last phrase had Renee pop up from her spot on the floor and began to make her way out the back of the house. It was slightly exciting to Renee to be sneaking about, plus it took her mind off other things.

"It sucks that Autoburro is so far away. I still have a few weeks of summer before school. It's going to be boring without you." Kae had began once she felt they were a safe distance from civilization.
"I'm sorry Kae, but I don't want to miss Freshman Orientation. I'm so excited! I will finally be in the same school as Kasey." June's eyes went distant and her face reddened as she mentioned the name. "I would take you with me but humans aren't allowed..."
"Yeah I know, it's alright. Though Autoburro sounds amazing, wish I could see it at least once. Maybe when you learn an invisibility spell you can sneak me in!" Kae had mentioned hopeful. June agreed and said she would study hard.
"Well, this should be far enough." June stated as the two girl stopped, "I can save time if I fly the rest of the way from here." June reached into her pocket and pulled out a small broom. There's no way she's flying that. Renee thought skeptically. Though before her eyes, the broom expanded and June was quickly on top. There was one last hug between the girls and then June was gone. Kae waved until there was nothing left to see of her friend and then headed back with a sigh.

Renee stood there in shock and disappointment. Magic apparently was real, but now there was no way to get to this amazing school because 1: the only person she could follow just flew away and 2: although she had an inhuman appearance she was still a human and so wouldn't be allowed to Autoburro anyhow. "So much for a sign." She proclaimed dishearten and sank to the forest floor. Now what was she suppose to do? Fidgeting side to side she contemplated her next move. "I could wait until kae has to go to school and try my luck there. Though what will I do for food until then?" At that moment her stomach groaned in agreement. "Well good thing Auntie Lor taught me the basics of survival." Renee laughed as she rose to her feet, "it's almost like she knew."

~~~
So off she was to the oh so familiar woods again. Searching bushes, picking trees, and occasionally catching fish and trying to cook them on a small fire. Weeks had passed with this same routine and nights were getting colder as fall(and the school year) started to arrive. Normally Renee enjoyed the fresh cool air of Autumn but as the nights drew on it became colder and less tolerable, the chilling air seeping into her bones.
"You would think I would have run into some type of civilization by now." She said rubbing her arms for warmth. "Just somewhere to rest for a while, a church even!"  As long as it's night I'm sure they won't notice anything wrong with me...But to no avail, nothing but nature surrounded her. That is until one night, when the mother nature decided to be exceptionally cruel.
~~~

Unable to sleep Renee tossed and turned in her handmade nest, trying to get as close to her amateur fire as possible. No matter what though, there was just no way to shake off the cold ball of ice that seemed locked inside her body. "I can't wait to be in a real bed again." Renee mumbled in misery as she curled into herself.
Dreams were finally starting to sink in when a blood wrenching scream could be heard from the distance. A bit disappointed by the disturbance but unable to turn a blind eye to a person in need, Renee decided to search for the person. After all, with a scream like that they had to be in real danger. However after some time, Renee was unable to recall exactly where the scream originated from.

Her eyes shifted from side to side, ears desperately clinging to any sound that might give a hint as to where they might be. She was about to call out when there was a rustle in the nearby bushes.
"W-who is it?" Renee demanded, her voice shaking. What answered was a low growl, she backed off in fear. Though with her sudden movement the beast sprang from the shrubbery and pounced at Renee.

Her mind went blank.

Have to say that the way you build suspense is wonderful--I also really like how Renee is very thoughtful, and far from helpless. :] Can't wait to see more!
